1998 Tre Donne Barolo
I decanted this wine for about an hour before our dinner last night. The color is a pale garnet with amber edges. Rather light in appearance for a Barolo. A fragrant bouquet of game, leather and anise. It has a leathery palate on the attack, light body but nicely structured with complex flavors of cherry, truffles and black olives. The medium finish still has a slight grip of well rounded tannins. It definitely tastes better on the second day than last night.
I loved this wine when we first tried it with Josh Hanson from Small Vineyards. I guess I had higher expectations for a wine that I’ve had cellared for nearly 9 years. It just never really developed even after sitting overnight and wasn’t the experience I was hoping for. I’ll probably wait to open the other bottle that I still have. Overall, it was pleasant and obviously well-made but not overly exciting.
